Angie's list lets consumers rate construction firms.
Angie’s list allows consumer and contractors in the construction industry to rate the companies they have worked with. User’s (consumers) pay a small fee, and in exchange, can read and write reviews on companies they have worked with.
Angie’s List lets you see local contractors in your city (Chicago, Ohio, Portland, etc…) sorted by specialty (movers, home improvement, plumbers, electrical, roofing etc…)
We found some great reviews of Angie’s List online.
Knaddison.com said that the concept for Angie’s list has flaws, since by charging a fee, it deters customers from writing reviews. Also, it is possible that companies are leaving false positive reviews about themselves. >>>
Houseblogs users had mixed thoughts. Most said that Angie’s List was helpful for a period of time. After they had etablished relationships with good contractors, they didn’t need Angie’s List anymore. Some complained that ratings were inaccurate, but others said the service was decent. >>>
Epinions users gave it a 2.5 out of 5. They had mixed feelings. Some said things like “Angie’s List is the BEST way to find good people to do work in your area”. Others called it “a great idea, but not well implemented”. >>>
TechCrunch has an article noting that Angie’s List recieved a $35 Million dollar investment. They also noted that they have been around since 1995 and currently support over 600,000 members. They don’t mention any reviews of the actual service. Basically, this just means that someone believed in the quality of their service enough to give them a decent amount of money to expand. >>>
WorkingMomsAgainstGuilt mentioned the fact that she lives in an old home, and frequently needs renovations done. She turns to Angie’s List to pick out the best contractors. >>>
Bottom Line: 7 out of 10. Angie’s List offers a valuable service that few other sites do. While most review sites are free, Angie’s list charges a small fee that they claim filters out most of the artificial reviews that companies often write about themselves. There are a few criticisms, but overall, we recommend it. We think the service would be most useful to new homeowners in their first year.
